Mesoscopic superconductors in the London limit: equilibrium properties and metastability

چکیده

We present a study of the behaviour of metastable vortex states in mesoscopic superconductors. Our analysis relies on the London limit within which it is possible to derive closed analytical expressions for the magnetic field and the Gibbs free energy. We consider in particular the situation where the vortices are symmetrically distributed along a closed ring. There, we obtain expressions for the confining Bean-Livingston barrier and for the magnetization which turns out to be paramagnetic away from thermodynamic equilibrium. At low temperature, the barrier is high enough for this regime to be observable. We propose also a local description of both thermodynamic and metastable states based on elementary topological considerations; we find structural phase transitions of vortex patterns between these metastable states and we calculate the corresponding critical fields. Temperature dependence of the superheating field for superconductors in the high- London limit

We study the metastability of the superheated Meissner state in type II superconductors with 1 beyond Ginzburg-Landau theory, which is applicable only in the vicinity of the critical temperature. Within Eilenberger’s semiclassical approximation, we use the local electrodynamic response of the superconductor to derive a generalized thermodynamic potential valid at any temperature. The stability ...

A Hierarchy of Models for Type-II Superconductors

A hierarchy of models for type-II superconductors is presented. Through appropriate asymptotic limits we pass from the mesoscopic Ginzburg-Landau model to the London model with isolated superconducting vortices as line singularities, to vortex-density models, and finally to macroscopic critical-state models.

Vortex phase separation in mesoscopic superconductors

We demonstrate that in mesoscopic type II superconductors with the lateral size commensurate with London penetration depth, the ground state of vortices pinned by homogeneously distributed columnar defects can form a hierarchical nested domain structure. Each domain is characterized by an average number of vortices trapped at a single pinning site within a given domain. Our study marks a radica...

Nature of the Order-disorder Transition of the Vortex Matter in Weakly Pinned Superconductors

Peak effect in weakly pinned superconductors represents order-disorder transition of the vortex matter. It is accompanied by metastability. Experimental manifestation of the metastability is highlighted and is explained by proposing a phenomenological model, in which each metastable vortex state corresponds to a distinct critical current density J c . Existence of a unique stable state correspo...

Tunable quasiparticle trapping in Meissner and vortex states of mesoscopic superconductors.

Nowadays, superconductors serve in numerous applications, from high-field magnets to ultrasensitive detectors of radiation. Mesoscopic superconducting devices, referring to those with nanoscale dimensions, are in a special position as they are easily driven out of equilibrium under typical operating conditions. The out-of-equilibrium superconductors are characterized by non-equilibrium quasipar...
